Myrtle Beach Shag Dancing
The original shag dance was said to have originated
in Atlantic Beach. It became prevalent in the 1940's in Myrtle
Beach and in 1984 was named the South Carolina State dance.
With many competitions and two large scale events in Myrtle
Beach Shagging is still the deal for beach entertainment. A
smooth shuffle step danced to the soothing sounds of beach music,
beach goers have been dancing the shag for generations.
The
Society of Stranders or SOS corporation is owned and operated
by the Association of Carolina Shag Clubs. The ACSC is a non
profit organization of local shag clubs with groups from Baltimore
to Miami. The Eastern shag is merging with Western swing to
become a popular new dance faze known as the Swag. The SOS is
best known for their two major events of the year: the Spring
Safari and The Fall Migration, which brings thousands of shaggers
to Myrtle Beach twice a year. |
